Jasper police: 5-year-old girl in critical but stable condition after dog attack
Jasper police say the little girl viciously attacked by a dog Friday night is in critical but stable condition today at Children's of Alabama.
According to a statement from Chief Connie Rowe, the 5-year-old girl was attacked by what "resembled" a pit bull while she played with another child near her home on Preston Avenue. A neighbor rescued the victim, freeing her from the dog.
"She was pretty much lifeless," Leconyea Duncan, a neighbor of the victim, told ABC 33/40 at the scene. "She had a severe head wound at the top of her head."
The child was airlifted to the hospital around 8 p.m. and she underwent surgery overnight to close the wound to her head, Rowe said.
The dog, which the owner has described as a pit bull with all of its proper shots and vaccinations, has been quarantined. Its owner is cooperating with the authorities as they continue to investigate.
