JefCo BOE approves contract for new superintendent

The Jefferson County Board of Education unanimously approved a contract for its new superintendent on Tuesday morning.

The 3-year, $185,000 contract{}for Dr. Stephen Nowlin is effective January 1, 2013.{} He begins on January 2nd.{}{} Dr. Phil Hammonds will retire in February.{} Nowlin will train with Hammonds for the month leading into Hammonds retirement.

In addition to his salary, the contract also{}calls for a 3.5% pay raise each year; however, he must receive a satisfactory evaluation from the board.{} Nowlin{}will also receive a{}car and housing allowance.

Nowlin is currently{}the superintendent of Lee County schools in Opelika.{} He{}was chosen by the JefCo BOE{}in a 4-1 vote in October.{}
