The Bessemer courthouse isn't going anywhere.
The Jefferson County Commission voted to terminated the current lease and enter into a new one at a lower rate. The old one cost the county 8.3 million dollars a year. The new lease is for 4.5 million. Upon its expiration in 2037, the county can purchase it for one thousand dollars.
The commissioners call it a big win for the county. In addition to freeing up money for other services, this renegotiation marks the first deal struck with creditors.
