JeffCo car tag renewals could come to city hall near you

Right now, no Jefferson County city is in the car tag business. But one signature will change that for eight municipalities.

A bill to allow cities to issue and renew car tags in Jefferson County is headed to Governor Robert Bentley for his signature.

The measure is sponsored by Representative Paul Demarco, (R) Homewood. It would allow cities to charge a five dollar fee to cover the cost of the tag computer and program. All cities would need to provide are employees.

Vestavia Hills plans on offering the service by April.

Right now, Mountain Brook, Fultondale, Gardendale, Leeds, Irondale, Sylvan Springs, Midfield and Trussville have expressed interest in handling car tags. {}

This measure is expected to shorten the long car tag lines.
