A Jefferson County school sidewalk project is saved. ABC 33/40 was the first to report on the contract dispute that caused the Chalkville Elementary School project to be struck from the books.
But ALDOT has agreed to reallocate the 135 thousand dollars for sidewalks and crosswalks outside the school. It's where a crossing guard was killed on the job a few years ago.
Commissioner Joe Knight says Alabama Power has offered assistance. He and the school's principal will remove roadside debris to help move the project along.
"We're trying to move forward and get this project done. It's a very tough situation. It doesn't look like a big road but that's 12 hundred kids," said Knight.
The Safe Routes to School grant was initially lost because the county couldn't afford the necessary utility work and it missed some deadlines.
Knight isn't sure when the work will be done but says it won't be finished in time for the first day of school.
