JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the Birmingham man who was shot and killed by a deputy Friday night.Devante Kyshon Hinds, 21, was shot after allegedly trying to run over a sheriff's deputy who had interrupted a drug deal outside a Walmart on Parkway East. Hinds, who was reportedly at the location to sell heroin, was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.Chief Deputy Randy Christian said the deputies involved in the shooting acted in self defense, according to a preliminary investigation and evidence obtained at the scene. Investigators are expected to hand over their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office for review. "Our prayers go out to the family affected by the sad loss of this young man," Christian said in a news release. "We will also make certain our deputies involved get all the care needed to insure their well being. Illegal drug activity continues to be an evil in our society that takes lives and shatters families. There is never a good ending."
