Circuit Court Judge denies motion to reduce bond for man accused in killing of sex offender
CULLMAN, Ala. A Cullman County Circuit Court judge denied a request for bond to be reduced for a father accused of killing his daughter's abuser earlier this month.
Judge Gregory Nicholas announced the decision Thursday afternoon, citing lack of jurisdiction over the case. The ruling means cash bond for Jay Maynor, who is charged with murder, attempted murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and reckless endangerment, will remain at $141,000. Maynor is accused in the shooting death of Raymond Earl Brooks, who was convicted of a sex crime involving the suspect's daughter several years ago.
"At this stage of the criminal process, it is the District Court and not the Circuit Court that has jurisdiction to hear a motion to reduce bond," Nicholas said in the order.Defense argued Maynor couldn't afford the cash bond and asked for a property bond that could be signed by local supporters.
Prosecutors said Maynor is a threat and should remain in jail.
