Jury convicts former Greene Co. Circuit Clerk

A Greene County jury convicted former CircuitClerk, Etta Edwards, of First Degree Theft of Property Thursday.{} Edwards was charged in 2011 with stealingmore than $138,000. The money had been paid to the court system.{}

Edwards defense attorney said it wasnot stealing but sloppy bookkeeping. {}Stateauditor Isagore McGee testified Wednesday that he found $94,000 in suspecttransactions during a routine examination. After auditing office records, McGeesaid he determined that $138,000 had gone missing. McGee said Edwards told himthat she didn't know about the problems or suggested that someone might havebroken into her office to steal the funds.

Edwards is facing 3 to 5 years inprison.
