University officials have delayed the demolition of the historic Kilgore House until 2 p.m. Monday.
University officials say they will only demolish the back porch of the house. They are in the process of preserving items on the inside of the main house.
The small schoolhouse in the back of the property will not be torn down. Preservationists believe Mr. Kilgore's wife taught in the building.
The university decided to demolish the building after a buyer never came forward. It is listed on the Alabama Register of Historic Places. The space will be devoted to a new student plaza with an outdoor dining pavilion.
