Lawmaker requests National Guard troops in schools

In response to the veto of a local House bill Tuesday, Rep Johnny Mack Morrow, D-Red Bay, has sent a request to Gov. Robert Bentley to post armed National Guard personnel in Alabama's schools. After a bill passed that would have allowed volunteer armed guards in each school, Bentley rejected it saying he wanted more information on the training of volunteers.Morrow says parents, school personnel and children are frightened after the killings in Dale County and Newtown, Conn. Most schools in rural counties have no resource officers and no money to hire them.Morrow said he would expect National Guardsmen to patrol schools until people feel safe again.Governor Bentley was not immediately available for comment.
