Legislative committee passes education budget

A conference committee of Alabama House and Senate members has approved an education budget that would increase funding for education employees' health insurance, but doesn't include a pay raise. The conference committee approved a $5.9 billion budget for the 2014-2015 school year on Tuesday. It is about $97 million less than this year's education budget. The budget increases funding for public education employees' health insurance to try to keep them from paying higher premiums, but it doesn't include the 2 percent raise recommended by Gov. Robert Bentley. The conference committee's work still must be approved by the House and Senate. The proposed budget includes slight increases for K-12 schools, community colleges and universities.
