Legislator says medical marijuana bill won't go far
A passionate debate in Montgomery Wednesday afternoon on medical marijuana yields success for both sides of the debate. The House Health Committee hosted an hour and a half long hearing on the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes. Proponents stated legal drugs they use now to ease pain are expensive and sometimes dangerous. Detractors, including the Medical Association of Alabama, told the committee that marijuana is dangerous and has not been medically proven to be helpful to people living with pain any more than aspirin. After a clear lack of support from committee members, Chair, Rep. Jim McClendon said he would not put a medical marijuana bill on the committee's calendar. The Alabama Medical Marijuana Coalition says just having a hearing is a sign of progress.
