Lots of heat + little water = problems for farmers

Just a couple of weeks ago Butch Haver thought his crops were doing fine. He had some irrigation and some plasticulture.

"I could keep the soil moist," said the Wellington farmer.

But with recent extreme heat and little rain, an ok season could go bad{}very quickly. Like many small farmers, Haver does not have{}enough resources to keep all of his crops thriving. Corn, peas, and tomatoes{}are a problem.

"I need rain," said Haver {}" I water the crops{}3 days a week. It is an expense, but you have to do it."
