Mississippi state record watermelon grown by Jerry Vaughn

A Water Valley watermelon grower has set a new state record for largest watermelon.

Jerry Vaughn's record setting watermelon weighed in at 239. 5 pounds, is 38 inches long with a girth of 5 feet, 3 inches.

Vaughn officially weighed the melon in last Friday on state certified scales.

On Saturday, Vaughn and his family headed to Missouri to enter the melon in the Great Pumpkin Common-Wealth.

He won top prize in the watermelon category and $600.

He credits the hot September days and the seed line for the weight of the melon.
