Mercury spill at Helena Middle school

Helena Middle School (

A mercury spill at Helena Middle School has emergency personnel closely monitoring at least eight students who were exposed.{} The spill happened just after lunch on Thursday during a science lab.

The Shelby County Environmental Management Agency and hazardous material teams from both Helena and Pelham Fire Departments responded to the incident and quarantined the lab and an adjoining classroom.

Emergency personnel believe the amount of mercury spilled isn't a serious threat but the school is taking every possible precaution to ensure the safety of the students.

We have a crew on the scene and will have more information as it is made available.

Update 3:45 p.m.

Emergency workers used a Jerome Personnel Air Monitor (Jerome Meter) to scan eight students exposed to the mercury spill.{} All eight were cleared with none of their levels of mercury exposure being of a health concern.

The students went home with their parents, and officials say school will resume on its normal schedule on Friday.
