In Hoover, a miracle of sorts is on the way for special needs residents and their families.

City council agreed to spend more $300,000 to build a Miracle League baseball field at Hoover Sports Park East.

Hoover Mayor Gary Ivey says the field will be outfitted for accessible and safe fun for all. It will have a concrete surface covered in rubber for people with wheelchairs and others with various disabilities. No longer will they have to go to other parks to play, they can enjoy games in Hoover, he adds.

Ivey says, more than a year ago, The Over the Mountain Miracle group approached the Council with the idea. The group has raised some $70,000, which will help cover equipment, uniforms and other expenses. The city will pay for the construction.

"We want all the children and the city to have an opportunity to play and get outside and enjoy themselves, and it's just something we hadn't had and it's long overdue," Ivey says.

The city hopes to begin construction in June and finish the field within five months. Ivey hopes it will be open sometime this fall.
