More than 200 attend memorial service for slain wife of Homewood minister

Karen Louise Shahan

A memorial service was held Saturday for the wife of a Homewood pastor as police continue to investigate her death.

Karen Louise Shahan, 52, was found dead on a couch inside her home on Hugh Circle July 22. Her husband, Rev. Richard Shahan, serves as an associate pastor at First Baptist Church in Birmingham, where more than 200 people gathered today for the service. He learned of his wife's death while out of town visiting family.

The church's interim pastor, Rev. Charles Carter, spoke at the service and described the slain Shahan as a devoted mother and wife. She was also an employee at a local Hobby Lobby store. A company spokesperson Wednesday released the following statement regarding Shahan's death:

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family."
