Mother charged in Friday's kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy

The non-custodial mother suspected of kidnapping her 5-year-old son Friday during a Department of Human Resources supervised visit has been charged, the Birmingham Police Department reports.

Daphne Moorer, 28, of Birmingham, has been charged with kidnapping, and she is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $15,000 bond.

Moorer, who reportedly suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, allegedly took her biological son, Jamari Knox, after a DHR supervisor stepped away momentarily during an office visit at around 2:30 p.m.Birmingham police reported the kidnapping of Knox at around 10 p.m. while investigators conducted a search of the area. Just before midnight, they located the boy and his mother at Moorer's home on Arthur Shores Drive.

Knox was found unharmed, and he was placed back into DHR custody without incident.
