Road crews remain hard at work in Cullman County Thursday night as they attempt to "treat" an eight-mile stretch of Interstate 65 in both directions while traffic has backed up for miles.
Alabama State Troopers closed down the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate between mile markers 310 and 318 due to several accidents earlier in the day that all occurred along the now closed stretch of icy roadway.
The decision to shut down travel on the interstate has left many motorists in a helpless standstill. The stranded travelers have been stuck on I-65 for several hours, with some having been there since 2 p.m., prompting the Red Cross to open the Cullman Civic Center on 5th Street Southwest as a shelter for the motorists with nowhere to go.
Officials have not said how long it might be before the interstate is re-opened.Update:
The Southbound lanes of Interstate 65 have been re-opened, but traffic is still moving slowly. Both Northbound lanes remain closed.
Road and Transportation trucks are on the scene spraying sand on the interstate.
