Mountain Brook pulls away late to put away Wenonah
Mountain Brook closed the third quarter on a 22-9 run and kept Wenonah at arms reach the rest of the way to win the second annual Birmingham Tip-Off Classic.
The Spartans' (25-3) 77-68 victory is their 14th straight win while the Dragons (23-7) have lost three of their last six.
The game was played at Birmingham-Southern College.
Mountain Brook's Alex Peters fell just short of a triple double. The 6-foot-8 post player had 23 points, nine rebounds and nine blocked shots.
Guards Tawarren Grant and Ben Shearer scored 15 points a piece in the win.
Marcus Williams led Wenonah with 18 points.
Alabama commit Justin Coleman and Cedric McGinnis each had 11 points in the loss.
"Mountain Brook is hungrier than us right now," Wenonah coach Cedric Lane told AL.com. "They outplayed us tonight. The big thing is they are hungrier and that big guy adds another whole dimension to their team than what they had last year. The statement of Wenonah basketball is playing harder than the other guys. That's our focus and right now we're not getting that done."
Mountain Brook is the No. 2 ranked team in Class 6A and Wenonah is the state's top ranked team in Class 5A.
The Spartans had a 25-24 lead at halftime but Wenonah used an 8-0 run to take a 34-31 lead three minutes into the third quarter.
That's when Peters and Mountain Brook got hot and put the game away.
