Mountain Brook's Schweers takes head job at Cornerstone School
Christian Schweers will have the chance to build the basketball program at Cornerstone School.
The 29-year-old Mountain Brook assistant has been hired to be head coach at Cornerstone, which will open next school year in Birmingham, on the campus of the former Parkway Christian Academy.
Cornerstone will compete in Class 1A. In addition to basketball, the school will offer Cross Country, Swimming, Track and Volleyball.
Expect Cornerstone's approach to look like the style that helped propel Mountain Brook to the past two Class 6A titles.
"It won't look identical because only Bucky (McMillan) can make that what it is," Schweers told AL.com. "Essentially the way I hope we play is aggressive full-court defense and sound half-court offense and a disruptive style. I actually honestly hope to play even faster on offense than what we have played over the year at Mountain Brook. I believe in transition offense and getting it out of the net and going and shooting a lot of 3-pointers."
Schweers has worked as a Mountain Brook assistant the last five years. He was an assistant coach at Trinity in Montgomery before that, where Schweers' father, Jack, is the head coach.
