Nearly 2,500 volunteers participate in Birmingham "Day of Service"

Nearly 2,500 people are participating in volunteer projects in the City of Birmingham's "Day of Service" Wednesday.

The partnership with Hands on Birmingham marks the beginning of the city's "Empowerment Week," a five-day long commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement. Hands on Birmingham helped recruit volunteers for the projects. The City of Birmingham spearheaded some of the projects specifically geared toward the "50{}Years Forward" campaign.

Volunteers from various organizations are planting trees, cleaning up lots and reading to children. The projects wrap up at 2:30 p.m.
