New Birmingham Council to take oath of office

The Birmingham City Council will be sworn in Thursday, October 24, 2013, at 6PM at the historic Alabama Theatre. {}This ceremony comes at the same time the city commemorates the City Council's 50th Anniversary.

{}According to a news release sent by Councilor Lashunda Scales, "it was on March 5, 1963 that the city of Birmingham held a municipal election to elect a mayor and nine council members to serve at-large which replaced the former Birmingham City Commission under former Commissioner Bull Conner. It was the first election to be held after the City of Birmingham adopted the Mayor-Council Act of 1955 as its form of government.{}Meanwhile, in 1989 a lawsuit was brought by Russell Yarbrough (Yarbrough et al v. City of Birmingham), to change the 'at large' method of electing City Council members to district representatives {}as a result of a court order."{}After the swearing in, the 50th Anniversary Music Festival will be held at RailRoad Park. Both events are free and open to the general public.{}{}Ceremonial Swearing-InDate: {} {} {} {} {} Thursday, October 24, 2013Reception: {} 5 p.m.Event Time: {}6 p.m.Place: {} {} {} {} {}Alabama Theatre - 1817 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203{}50th Anniversary Music Festival {}Date: {} {} {} {} {} Saturday, October 26, 2013Time: {} {} {} {} {} 6 p.m. / MAIN EVENT - 7p.m.Place: {} {} {} {} {}RailRoad Park - 1600 1st Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35203{}
