New Helena High School welcomes students

The brand new Helena High School welcomed more than 1,000 students Thursday.

Excited and anxious students and faculty had an added twist: it's the first day of the new school year too. Shelby County Schools Superintendent Randy Fuller said everything went off smoothly. A school spokesperson told ABC 33/40 teachers would ease students back into studies because everyone would be getting used to new surroundings.

The building features a state-of-the art media center, high-tech classrooms and a storm shelter.

A total of more than 20,000 students returned to school in the Shelby County Schools district, according to Fuller.
