New treatment for GERD

Chronic reflux disease affects more than 30 million Americans. {}Most of those patients suffer from GERD, which is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. {}Now, there is new hope of treatment in central Alabama. {}Trinity Medical Center is now the first hospital in the state to offer a new treatment for chronic reflux disease. {}Recently, Drs. Scott Pennington and John Touliatos, general surgeons, became the first physicians in Alabama to implant the LINX Reflux Management System.GERD is sometimes caused by a weak Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) that allows acid and bile to reflux from the stomach into the esophagus. {}The LINX System augments the weak LES, restoring the body's natural barrier to reflux.The LINX System is a small, flexible band of magnets enclosed in titanium beads. {}The device is laparoscopically placed around the esophagus just above the stomach. The magnetic attraction between the beads helps keep the LES closed to prevent reflux. Swallowing forces break the magnetic bond, allowing food and liquid to pass normally into the stomach. {}Magnetic attraction closes the LES immediately after swallowing, restoring the barrier to reflux.{}
