Oak Mtn. Middle students raise over $25k for Toys for Tots

An enthusiastic holiday spirit arrived early among students at Oak Mountain Middle School.

The{}National Junior Honor Society{}raised{}$25,201.95 for local children in need. This contribution exceeded the 2011 donation by over $200.

During the month of November, students became very creative in earning donations to benefit this charity sponsored by the Birmingham area United States Marine Corps. Students in grades 6 - 8 helped baby sit, performed household and yard chores, held bake sales, and even sacked groceries at the Indian Springs Winn-Dixie location to earn their donations. School employees also participated by hosting a faculty volleyball game which matched Alabama and Auburn alumni against one another. All proceeds benefited Toys for Tots.

Members of the National Junior Honor Society, all eighth graders, are looking forward to buying new toys, books, games, bicycles, and other items when they shop Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Hoover Toys R Us.

Armed with calculators, students, will be given a specific amount to spend. Once shopping is complete,{}the purchases{}will be loaded on moving trucks waiting outside.{} An{}assembly will then be held for the entire student body, so that all students can see the{}results of their commitment to help children who are less fortunate.

In addition to Oak Mountain Middle School's effort, Oak Mountain High School National Honor Society members also raised $4,500 for Toys for Tots and donated $500 to Oak Mountain Missions to support people in the community.
