Officer killed off-duty laid to rest

{}{}{} It was{}a somber farewell Saturday for Officer Keary Hollis.{}{} A sea blue of law enforcement officers from all across Alabama flocked to Greater New Antioch Baptist Church. "We'd drive as far as they let us. I mean it's a hard job. It takes certain individuals to do. Whether they're on duty or off duty, they're still police officers one of our brothers," said Ofc. Joseph Kennington with Huntsville Police Department.{}{} {}{} As the funeral began, spectators lined the streets.{} Many were still in disbelief of how Hollis was killed.{} He was shot off-duty last Saturday night outside a gas station in Ensley.{} People like Patrick Madison were among concerned{}citizens who paid respect from outside church.{} "While the {}family is going in. I know some of the family members. I'm just paying my respect," he said.{}{}{}{}{} Cassandra Norman and her family watched{}the procession from their porch.{} She{}knew officer Hollis.{} They just had an encounter last month. "I was having problems in the neighborhood. I called and he came straight out and just solved everything for me."{}{}{}{}That was the sentiment of thoughts during the funeral, as friends and co-workers comforted Hollis' Family.{} Many said he was dedicated to the force and always kept you laughing. {}"For him to lose his life like this is just senseless. We realize that the family and the department, we need to remember him and move forward and continue to serve the City of Birmingham,"said Chief A.C. Roper.{}{}{} Roper says that's what Officer Hollis would have wanted.{} Ministers pledged to use Hollis' tragic death to stop senseless violence{}. "We hope that in any tragedy in the darkest light, we hope that some light can come out of it. Knowing that the faith community can partner with us because the police department can't be everywhere and can't do everything. So we need those key stakeholders in the community to really step up and help us with our young men."{}{}{} Hollis' desire was to follow in his uncle's footsteps and become a homicide detective.{} His own father was tragically killed in 1989.{}{}{}{}{}{}{}The officer was{} also remembered on the airwaves.{} Several radio stations throughout Birmingham paused at 11:00 am, the time the funeral began,{}for a moment of silence in honor of Hollis{}{}{} He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
