Omega 3 Fatty Acids & Your Heart

"Omega-3 Fatty Acids or fish oil supplements are for good heart health. They'll reduce your risk of cardiovascular problems.{} "Those healthful messages have been preached for years by physicians, nutritionists, fitness experts and even the American Heart Association.

But now, a Greek research team reports that may not be true.

The Greek researchers pooled the results of 20 studies attempting to identify common findings. The studies included almost 69,000 people who were either taking supplements or not.

The lead researcher says, their study concluded that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are not statistically significantly associated with major cardiovascular outcomes across various patient populations.

He adds, their findings do not justify the use of omega-3 as a structured intervention in everyday clinical practice or guidelines supporting dietary administration.

Cardiologist and spokesperson for the American Heart Association, Dr. Gregg Fonarow says, the study, did show a nine percent reduction in cardiac death. And while further studies are needed, it remains reasonable to consider dietary consumption of fish or fish oil supplements for modest cardiovascular protection.

The Greek team published its report in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
