Pam Huff and James Spann remember Wendell Harris

The man who hired James Spann and Pam Huff in the late 70s and gave two young, inexperienced people a chance in television news and weather passed away early Tuesday morning.

Wendell Harris was 78 years old.

He had lived and worked in Birmingham during the turbulent 60s. He served as news director and news anchor at Channel 13, WVTM-TV. Harris gave up the anchor chair and allowed a 24 year old Pam Huff to have it. She became the first female news anchor in the state to hold a nightly news anchor position.

In 2001, Huff had the opportunity to interview Harris for a story to air on abc3340. Ever the consummate newsman, he couldn't help but lament the fact that news sometimes seems so{}superficial.

Listen to the interview and James Spann and Pam Huff discuss their first news director in Birmingham.
