PC, Mac computers at risk of Internet virus
HOOVER - AL —
Now might be a good time to do a quick check of your computer.
The FBI says at 12:00 a. m., Monday, tens of thousands of Americans might lose their Internet service due to a computer virus.
Your computer might have been infected by hackers who figured out a way to redirect your Internet searches to bogus web sites for profit.
Security experts at Symantec say infected computers probably got the DNS changer through e-mail attachments or clicking on infected links.
Next week the FBI will shut down the servers used by the hackers. That means if your computer is infected and you don't take steps to protect yourself you could lose all access to the Internet.
The problem affects both PC and Mac users.
Experts say it's easy to check your computer. Log on to www.dnsok.us. You'll have a big green screen come up if your computer is good. If your computer is infected there will be a red screen and it will tell you what to do to fix the problem.
