The pedestrian struck and killed by a Birmingham Max DART trolley Tuesday has been identified as 25-year-old Pouneh Bahri of Centreville, Virginia, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
Bahri was a student at the Horizons School.
School officials -- Executive Director Dr. Jade Carter and Assistant Director Dr. Brian Geiger -- have since released the following statement regarding the accident:
"An accident occurred today involving one of the female students at The Horizons School in Birmingham, AL.
"The student's family has been notified and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her friends and teachers."
According to the school's website, "The Horizons School offers a non-degree postsecondary program specifically designed to facilitate personal, social and career independence for students with mild learning disabilities and other mild handicapping conditions."
Bahri was struck around 12:15 p.m. while attempting to cross 20th Street South. The trolley was in the process of making a left turn onto the street when it struck Bahri, who became trapped underneath and dragged a few feet before coming to a stop.
The accident is under investigation.
