Pedestrian struck and killed by Birmingham Max DART trolley near 5 Points South (Update)
Update 3:20 p.m.
ABC 33/40 has learned the victim killed after being hit by a Max DART Trolley in Birmingham's South side Tuesday was a female student at the nearby Horizons School.
School officials -- Executive Director Dr. Jade Carter and Assistant Director Dr. Brian Geiger -- have since released the following statement regarding the accident:
"An accident occurred today involving one of the female students at The Horizons School in Birmingham, AL.
"The student's family has been notified and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her friends and teachers."
According to the school's website, "The Horizons School offers a non-degree postsecondary program specifically designed to facilitate personal, social and career independence for students with mild learning disabilities and other mild handicapping conditions."
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A pedestrian was struck and killed Tuesday by a Birmingham Max DART trolley near Five Points South, ABC 33/40 reporter Haley Westbrook has confirmed.
The victim was struck around 12:30 p.m. while attempting to cross 20th Street South. The trolley was in the process of making a left turn onto the street when it struck the pedestrian, who became trapped underneath and dragged a few feet before coming to a stop.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews were called to the scene, where the pronounced the victim deceased.
The victim's identity hasn't been released. Authorities will have a portion of 20th Street South closed for a couple of hours as they continue to investigate.
