Pelham phasing out outdoor warning sirens

The City of Pelham is phasing out its outdoor warning siren system, according to Mayor Gary Waters.

There are 27 sirens in the city, and Waters said the city will stop maintenance to slowly phase them out.{}

"It's antiquated technology," said Waters.

Pelham will keep several sirens, including those located at the civic complex and amphitheater.

"We need to rely on our smart phone app or our electronic app," added Waters. "We need to have an indoor weather radio and monitor tv."

Waters said it may take several years before the sirens stop working.
