UPDATE: Ammunition removed from Walker Co. man's leg outside UAB Hospital

Update 3:45 p.m.{}

The Walker County man who arrived late Friday night with ammunition in his leg is now inside UAB Hospital in stable condition. Police say he was allowed inside after an expert removed the 40 mm ammunition for a smoke grenade. They say he had it in his lap when it went off and the ammunition got embedded in his leg.

The man initially went to the hospital in Walker County but was transferred to UAB and forced to wait outside for approximately six hours after an x-ray showed "an object" inside his leg.

The man's name has not been released.

Update 1 a.m.

A UAB police sergeant told ABC 33/40's Venton Blandin that a man was being transported from a hospital in Walker County to UAB Hospital Friday night when an "object" inside his leg "went off." The man, who is in stable condition, is currently being treated in an ambulance outside the emergency room at UAB. According to police, the man is in good spirits and talking with medical personnel.{}

The object inside his leg has yet to be identified.

Update 12:45 a.m.{}

UAB Hospital released the following statement regarding an incident at its emergency room late Friday night:{}

"A person has been brought by ambulance to UAB from another hospital with an injury that has required the attention of the bomb squad. No further details are currently available."



According to Birmingham police, a man who was being transported to the UAB Hospital emergency room late Friday night was found to have an unknown object on his leg, possibly some type of ammunition, causing authorities to close nearby streets while they investigate. A bomb squad has been called to assist in the probe.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Authorities have blocked off streets near the UAB Hospital emergency room late Friday night.

Birmingham police and UAB officers are both at the scene. The reason for the street closure and the heavy police presence is unknown at this time.
