Police investigating two children shot in 2 incidents in 1 day

Birmingham police are investigating 2 shootings involving 2 children in 1 day.

Around 7pm, officers and paramedics were dispatched to the 600 block of Brussels Circle. When they arrived, they found no victim. Instead, the 3-year-old boy was already taken to the nearest medical center, Trinity Hospital.

Police believe a friend of the family placed his weapon in a sofa and went to talk to others inside the apartment. The 3-year-old went to play on the sofa, found the gun, and shot himself accidentally. The friend rushed the child to Trinity, where he was dropped off. Birmingham paramedics then transported the child to Children's Hospital.{}

Also today, a 6-year-old shot himself in a foot, according to Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards. The child reached for a gun as his uncle was driving to get food. The driver heard a bang and thought a tire blew. Instead, his nephew was in the backseat with a bloody foot.

The bullet passed cleanly through the foot.

The 6-year-old was discharged shortly ago from Children's Hospital. The 3-year-old remains there in{}stable condition. Lt. Edwards says investigators are looking into whether charges will be filed in the case of the 3-year-old.

No others were injured in either incident.
