Pratt City rebuilds with "green" homes

Work continues in Pratt City, a community hit hard by the April 27, 2011 tornadoes.

Homes are going up, many of the homes in the north Pratt neighborhood are being rebuiltas "LEED certified" energy efficient homes.

The plan is to build more than 20 of these "green homes" that in the long run are said to reduce the operating costs for home owners.

Contractors say it's part of the City of Birmingham's plan to rebuild Pratt City 'bigger and stronger'.

Dirk Forbes, President & CEO of Innovative Home Builders LLC says, "It's going to have to be a united effort to get (Pratt City) back, but we're trying to do all we can for the community. We're trying to do our part along with everyone else who has been a part of this rebuild effort."

A unique aspect of these new "green homes" is they come with a FEMA certified safe room. The rooms have concrete walls and access to running water, in the event of severe weather.
