Preliminary hearing set for Maylene mother charged in son's death
The preliminary hearing for the Maylene mother charged in her 19-month-old son's death has been set for next month, according to court records.
22-year-old Sommer Nicole Wilford will appear before a Shelby County judge April 2. Friday, she was charged with Reckless Murder after her son's remains were found in a burned car.
Around 12 am, firefighters responded to an Alabaster bank located off Highway 119 at Kent Dairy Road. Police said when they arrived, Wilford was standing next to the car. Once the flames were extinguished, they found the body of Jayden Allen.
Wilford was charged with Reckless Murder and remains in the Shelby County Jail under a $300,000 bond.
Monday morning, Allen's daycare, Noah's Park Child Care, held a memorial service.
"We loved him," said Center Director Madeleine Mims. "He was so much fun."
Teachers released blue balloons, shared stories and prayed.
"Hopefully things will come to light that will explain things for us and help everybody," added Mims.
Wilford's first court appearance was scheduled for Monday morning. Her attorney is asking for her bond to be reduced.
The accident remains under investigation.
