Program for girls in engineering at local middle school
It was all about designing and building foil boats Wednesday for some Bumpus Middle School students in Hoover.Alabama Power's iCan program held a workshop for female students. The initiative's mission is to promote math and science studies and careers to the girls.Research shows a declining interest among girls in those subjects begins at middle school age."I think the biggest myth is that engineering is not for girls. You don't see many female role models in engineering, and obviously, we are trying to change that," Alabama Power engineerChristy Hyche says. The program serves other schools including Trussville Middle Schools and Birmingham's Philips Academy.
