Monday afternoon, the Jefferson County Department of Health will hold a public hearing regarding Drummond Company's Title V operating permit for ABC Coke in Tarrant. The hearing begins at 1:00 p.m. in Conference Room A at 1400 6th Avenue South in Birmingham.
The hearing offers an opportunity for individuals to file complaints about pollution. This hearing comes two weeks following an informational meeting held at Tarrant Intermediate School about the permitting process. The county health department hosted the meeting, but those in attendance were not allowed to ask questions at that time.
In 2013, the Environmental Protection AGency named Drummond Co. a "potentially responsible party" for toxic contamination in Collegeville, Fairmont, and Harriman Park.
The comment deadline is Friday, April 18, 2014. GASP, a nonprofit organization fighting for clean air in Alabama has set up a help line for anyone wishing to formally fire a written complaint to the Jefferson County Department of Health. The number is 1-866-581-GASP (4277).
