Rally to change payday lending practices
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
Several groups will hold a rally in downtown Birmingham Friday to draw attention to payday lending practices. Organizers want the laws to change.
Among the groups participating are Zonta, YWCA, AARP and The Women's Fund. They say the rally will be a "call for changes to predatory lending to end the victimization of working Alabamians." They believe special laws allow for the companies to charge exorbitant interest rates.
The rally will take place Friday at the YWCA's Harbert Gym on 23rd Street from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m..
State Representative Patricia Todd, (D) Birmingham, plans to introduce a bill this session to change payday loan laws.
