The 2013 National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament got underway Thursday at Lakeshore Foundation in Homewood.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and top seed in the tournament opened the day's competition with a 66-52 win over Missouri. Wisconsin-Whitewater's Derrick Bisnett led all scorers with 25 points while Carter Arey led the Tigers in scoring with 22.

The Illinois men took down Edinboro 73-29 in their first game of the tournament behind Nik Goncin's 20 points. Edinboro's Cyle Schriver led his team in scoring with 13.

Auburn University fell in its first game to the University of Texas Arlington 69-21. Kri Shannon tallied 20 points for UTA in the win. Jared Rhem led Auburn with eight points.

The No.2-seed University of Alabama team recorded a win in its opening game against Southwest Minnesota State 59-31. The Crimson Tide's Ryan Hynes scored 18 points and was the game's top performer. Derek Klinkner had 15 points for the Mustangs. {}

The tournament will resume Friday at 9 a.m. when Auburn squares off with Missouri followed by a matchup between Edinboro and Southwest Minnesota State.

In first afternoon game, Wisconsin-Whitewater will take on Texas-Arlington at 3 p.m. Alabama will face Illinois at 5 p.m.

The Alabama women will play Illinois in the first Women's Division game. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.

Thetournament is being hosted by the University of Alabama and is free to the public. It will conclude on Saturday.
