Reduction in benefits for long term unemployed

Federal sequestration - mandated budget cuts -will result in weekly benefit cuts for the long term unemployed. The cuts begin the week of April 28 and will run through September 30.

Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees says Alabamians receiving Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits will see a 12.8% reduction in benefits.{} All EUC claimants will receive notification of their new monetary determinations by mail. ADOL estimates approximately 16,500 Alabamians are receiving federal EUC benefits.

In most cases, Alabamians receiving regular unemployment compensation benefits, or those who have been unemployed for 26 weeks or less, will not be impacted by the cuts. The state is responsible for paying claims up to the first 26 weeks.
