CNN reports that new research could turn a hated pest into a life-saving hero.

The sight of roaches makes many people cringe, but for people trapped after a disaster, the sight of one could mean help is on the way. {}A team of engineers fitted roaches with electronics that allow the insects to be remotely controlled. {}They can also carry tiny cameras and microphones. The advances make the roaches valuable in search and rescue operations. {}Roaches typically fit into tight spaces. {}Researchers say the roaches can get into places search dogs can't, and they're much cheaper than building tiny robots.
