Report: Vanderbilt to hire Derek Mason as football coach

Derek Mason will reportedly be named the new head coach at Vanderbilt.

The Tennessean newspaper reports that Vanderbilt donor and search committee member John Ingram confirmed the hire.

"Yes sir, I am very excited," Ingram told the newspaper.

Mason has been the defensive coordinator at Stanford the last three years and was a Broyles Award finalist last season.

The Cardinal had the nations third ranked rushing defense in 2013.

Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris and Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton were also finalists for the Vanderbilt coaching job.

Mason will replace James Franklin, who was named head coach at Penn State earlier this month. Franklin helped the Commodores to a bowl game in each of his three seaons. Vanderbilt was won 16 of it's last 20 games.

A formal announcement from Vanderbilt is expected Friday afternoon and Mason is expected to be introduced as the new football coach as early as Saturday morning.
