Robbery suspect dies days after hanging himself in Birmingham jail cell
A man arrested for the robbery of a bank in downtown Birmingham last week has died, the Birmingham Police Department reports.
James Horton, 54, of Birmingham, was arrested and taken to Birmingham City Jail on Monday, November 5th after he robbed the PNC Bank located at 1927 1st Avenue North.
A detention officer found Horton hanging in his jail cell the following morning before dislodging him and immediately administering CPR. Birmingham Fire and Rescue were called to the jail and provided additional medical assistance.Horton was breathing on his own prior to being transported to Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, where he remained until hospital workers pronounced him deceased on Saturday, November 10th.Sgt. Johnnie Williams says the Birmingham Police Department Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an internal investigation, and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was contacted to conduct an external investigation.
