Salvation Army in need of food donations

Shelves are almost bare at one of the area's Salvation Army pantries.

The pantry in Bessemer is down to handing out bags of potatoes and a few canned goods.{}

This location serves almost 60 families each month.

"Christmas and Thanksgiving are when donations come in. Throughout the year, we are normally taking those donations over into the next year. This year is the first year where the next year has come and we are in need so soon. We've been in need since the beginning of January" according to Trina Dale a social worker with the Salvation Army in Bessemer.

Non-perishable food items, including canned goods, and food for children, such as cereal are needed most.

You can drop off donations at 1609 sixth avenue north in Bessemer.
