Samford Football Notebook; Bulldogs off to best start since '92

After Samford's 38-7 drubbing over then No. 19 The Citadel last Saturday, the Bulldogs moved to 5-1 on the year, which is the school's best record through six games in 20 years.

According to, the last time Samford won five out of their first six games was in 1992.{} They are now ranked No. 25 in the Sports Network Division I-FCS poll -- a poll they haven't entered in nearly 19 years.

Samford will host No. 13 Appalachian State this Saturday, and attempt to move to 4-1 in Southern Conference play.

Pat Sullivan named Coach of the Week named Sullivan as its Southern Conference Coach of the Week after leading the Bulldogs to their first win over a ranked opponent since 1994.

Tartt earns SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors

Jaquiski Tartt, a sophomore safety from Mobile, returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown and tallied three tackles in Samford's win over The Citadel last week, earning him Southern Conference's Defensive Player of the Week honors.

It was the Bulldog's second straight game with a defensive score and Tartt's second time to be named Defensive Player of the Week this season.{} He was also named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Month for his play in September.
