Samford prepares for SoCon matchup with Elon

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan called Elon a dangerous football team despite their record. (

The Samford football team practiced for about two hours in full pads Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs began working on their game plan for Saturday's Southern Conference game at Elon. {} Samford (6-3, 4-3 SoCon) is coming off a 24-17 double-overtime win over sixth-ranked Wofford. Elon (3-6, 1-5 SoCon) played at The Citadel last week, falling to the Bulldogs, 38-24. {} The game will be an adjustment for the Samford defense. Last week's opponent Wofford, averages 372.9 rushing yards per game, the second-highest average in the SoCon, while Elon leads the league in passing offense, averaging 300.4 passing yards per contest. {} "I think Wofford threw the ball seven times last week and Elon will probably throw it seven times in the first series or two," Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said. "At this time of year, you have faced teams that have done both, but now we have to get back into the mode of an up-tempo ballgame." {} Elon's Thomas Wilson is the top passer in the SoCon, averaging 291.9 passing yards per game. Elon receiver Aaron Mellette leads the league in receptions per game (8.7) and receiving yards per game (123.3). {} "We're facing a dangerous football team," Sullivan said. "Their record is not as good as the quality of team that they are. You start on offense with Mellette, and he would have been an NFL player but he decided to come back for his senior season. Wilson, their quarterback is a good player, and they can score. The difference in the game last year was we were able to get six turnovers." {} Sullivan said he thought his team had a good day of practice on Tuesday. {} "They've come to practice today with a great attitude," Sullivan said. "They want to get better, and we still haven't played our best game yet, and we have to work to do that." {} The Bulldogs will practice again Wednesday. The practice is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
