Scale Back Alabama kicks off contest

Alabamians have lost more than one million pounds since Scale Back Alabama contest started, and health officials say there is still more weight to be lost.{}

The 2014 contest begins with the weigh-in the week of January 18th through 24th, and the majority of counties will be hosting weigh-ins for teams who want to participate. Teams can stop by the Trinity Wellness Center located at 720 Montclair Road for their initial weigh in. Dates available for teams are January 18th from 10 a.m. to Noon, January 20 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., January 23rd from 4 p.m. To 6 p.m. And January 24 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.{} Parking is free. Scale Back Alabama is in its eighth year. It is designed for adults who form teams of four and compete for cash prize drawings over a 10-week period. For every team on which an individual loses at least 10 pounds, the team names are entered into a drawing with the top prize being $1,000 per team member. There are also prizes for second and third teams drawn. "There were 27,000 Alabamians who participated in last year's contest and lost almost 130,000 pounds," added Couch.{} "We're hoping for a big turnout in our area that results in the formation of healthy lifestyle habits."Scale Back Alabama is sponsored by the Alabama Hospital Association and the Alabama Department of Public Health, with underwriting by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.
