Sewage spilling into Jefferson County creeks

The Jefferson County Commission hired four companies to handle emergency sewer repairs Thursday morning.

Monday's heavy rain led to overflows and backups in the Hoover and Vestavia Hills areas.

The commission also suspended its competitive bidding law because the repairs are emergencies and an imminent threat to public health, according to the county's Environmental Services Department.{}

County workers will bypass the broken sewer lines to functional lines, but some homeowners refuse to let them work behind their houses.

The work could take days if not weeks.
